![]() ![]() Their opening setup bring out just 2 or 3 threats, and are often supplemented with ‘hand traps’. Midrange decks are somewhere between Combo and Control. They play the long game and rely on card advantage to slowly grind out the opponent. Their win condition could often be met on the first turn by opening with a threatening setup that is difficult for the opponent to answer.Ĭontrol decks are the slowest. Midrange: Branded Despia, Floowandereeze, Swordsoul, SalamangreatĬombo: Adventurer Tenyi, Tri-Brigade Lyrilusc, Virtual World, DrytronĬombo decks are the fastest. Picking from the top 10 decks, we could sort them as ![]() The various competitive decks in the current metagame can be broadly classified into 3 playstyle: Control, Midrange and Combo. You get the advantage and you create a little bubble for your ego, blaming everyone and everything except yourself. The above is the preliminary metagame breakdown of top-placing decks from tournaments played under the the new OCG 2022.01 Limit Regulation. My theory why people don’t play meta is unskillful, you get to deflect your insecurities as a player and bring up a whole bag of excuses to why didn’t win your duel: If you want to challenge yourself so badly, you could play Drytrons without the fairies, or pure Lyrilusc. You could’ve played some crazy stuff like Prank-Kids Eldlich. ![]() But if you’re so worried about a deck being too easy for you, why don’t you play something difficult? Like DDDs or Pendulums for example, nobody is forcing you to play Dark Magicians that’s how you chose to play. Of course, some meta decks over the game’s history haven’t exactly been the most intuitive to pilot. You’re probably not going to be the most skillful/technical player in the world to overcome: special summon Raviel set two. Well, I mean yeah, I agree… if your main competition with your discord/friend groups is something along the lines of Sacred Beasts and Cyber Angels. ![]() Now you win your duels by playing broken cards, decks, and archetypes and you ♥♥♥♥ all over my Blackwing Blue-Eyes deck, damn, you’re so good at setting up that Simorgh, Barrier Statue and Utopic Draco Future huh? You can tech in crazy cards, you can play a bunch of weird combo cards if you want.īut on the flip side, is there anything really creative about playing a rogue deck? I mean, what are you gonna do? Fit 20 trap cards into your Dark Magician deck? Is that what you define as creative and innovative, is by playing a rogue deck and fitting 20 floodgates? Do you think you have achieved something new and special for maining a Fossil Dyna and every Mirror Force in the game? You can always look at this in both ways, really, it’s down to each individual player whether or not they get creative, lack of creativity is present in both the meta and casual decks, a-ike If you think meta decks are uncreative, why don’t you get creative with them? Just because other people are copy/pasting other decks from youtube or whatever, doesn’t mean playing meta is uncreative, you don’t need to do that. I think we can all agree that going into the high elo ladder (Plat V and above), there will almost always be probably over half the playing field using a meta deck, and probably half of them using the same deck, and probably the most of them using a copy/paste list, right? Sure. But to argue that you play meta because ‘it’s boring?’ There are so many options in any given format, obviously to lesser and greater extent. If you don’t like Eldlich, you can play Sky Striker, if you don’t like Drytron, you can play True Draco, and I could go on. Y’know, if you don’t like Tri-Brigade, you can play Prank-Kids. On the other hand, there’s people that exclusively avoid meta completely, because it’s boring? I feel that if you’re telling me this in the 20 years that this game has existed and every format ever during those times that you never found any meta deck fun, I’d be very hard pressed to believe that. The meta can get stale and it can get boring overtime, especially months later. This isn't meant to rag on casual players, and not a whiny complaint about the meta either, it's trying to look at and understand both sides.Ī lot of people say they hate meta because it’s the same old decks, and the same old combos over and over again, I get that. ![]()
